The Genre Cards product is a task card game to support class instruction on genres. Learning genres is probably one of the most difficult tasks for students to learn and for instructors to teach. It’s very difficult to comprehend because it’s very abstract.
Students get confused with fantasy and fairy tales, the differences between fiction and nonfiction and so forth.
Playing a “game” is one of the ways I’ve found that works with children. Even though they are learning as they play, they are enjoying themselves by guessing and playing cards.
This game then it’s all about that; playing, guessing, wondering who is going to get the most cards and win. Also, students compete on who knows the most.
The product consists of:
32 genre cards ~ 12 genres and 12 descriptions/definitions
16 book cards for students to classify in the correct genres
