- Negative management creates a hostile ambiance that doesn’t create a positive situation in the workplace.
- People usually feel very susceptible towards a leader that is view as a tyrant.
- Leadership is Key to Positive Schools” written by Starr Sackstein is a great article that talks about the basic requirements to be a good principal.
- Treat people the way you want to be treated: THE GOLDEN RULE:
- Be professional when you talk to your teachers. Principals sometimes forget they were teachers once upon a time.
- Don’t treat teachers like if they were students. They went to college and are smart people. Perhaps it might be a greater idea to give clear instructions and expect great results.
- Teaching is a respectable and distinguished profession; it’s the most important profession in the world.
- Maybe districts need to consider retraining their managers and have clear expectations of their behavior and management procedures at their schools
- Create an environment of confidence and trust. A positive environment is very much felt when you walk into a school and so is a negative one.
- When teachers feel comfortable with their managers and the environment of their school, their students excel in all areas including standardized tests, benchmarks, and district assessments.
We all want to be part of a great workplace where we all feel at ease and eager to work. Teachers have great responsibilities and in the latter years, they wear many hats. They perform many tasks throughout the year: teacher, mother, disciplinarian, nurse, counselor, moderator, interventionist, chef, waiter, janitors and on top of that, they have to train students to pass a standardized test that is very hard to understand.

What terrific reminders. I have had some wonderful principals who were not only inspiring and supportive, but very respectful to the entire staff. The principal is truly a leader who can set the tone of school culture.

What you’ve said is so true. I’ve certainly worked with my share of tyrants and some good administrators.

I’ve been lucky! I’ve had conceited principals (two to be exact), but the others were great! Thank you for your comments!

Nice article, I believe many of these approaches to management also work in other occupational sectors as well. Thank you for sharing.
